Optimize processor scheduling for CPU speed

System processing is managed by Windows, which can allocate tasks between processors, as well as manage multiple processes on a single processor. The processor scheduling controls how much processor resources Windows XP devotes to a programs or processes. However, you can set Windows to allocate more processor resources to the programs that you are currently running in the foreground. This can result faster program response time. But if you have many background programs and services which include print jobs, disk backup and other applications running in the background while you are working, you may prefer Background services option.

If you have slow-running programs, you may set the processor scheduling to Programs. If your printing jobs are very slow or you run many programs in background while working another in foreground you may prefer the Background Services option.

To Change the Performance of Foreground and Background Programs:
· Click Start, click Control Panel, click System.

Speed up Windows XP performance

· Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance. You will get the following dialog.

Optimize Windows XP performance options for high performance windows

· Click the Advanced tab, and then do one of the following under Processor scheduling:
· Click Programs to assign more processor resources to the foreground program than the background program.
· Click Background services to assign equal amounts of processor resources to all programs.

If you click Programs, the result is a smoother, faster response time for your foreground program. If you want a background task, such as a Backup utility to run faster, click Background services.
