Customize Windows XP themes and display properties
You can speed up Windows XP performance by optimizing display properties. It is safe to improve Windows speed by disabling the Windows XP default theme back to Windows Classic style and turn off the visual effects and desktop backgrounds.
Click Start, click Control Panel, click Display.
In Display Properties click Appearance tab
In Appearance tab change "Windows XP style" to "Windows Classic style"
Click the "Effects..." button on the right. Then disable the following visual effects:
- Use the following transition effects for menus and tooltips
- Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts
- Show shadows under menus
- Show window content while dragging
- Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key
Disable desktop backgrounds
To improve desktop performance just desktop backgrounds or desktop wallpapers. In Display Properties click Desktop tab
In the Desktop tab click (None). You can set the desktop background color by clicking the Color on the right.
